CAREER CHOICE

Actually, I didn’t really know what I want to be in the future. If I have to choose a career now, I would want to become a counsellor/ psychology. There are many types of counselors; some are rehabilitation counsellors, marriage and family counsellors, mental counsellors and school counsellors. I want to become the school counsellor/ psychology. A school counsellor is known as guidance counsellor or educational counsellor. There are quite a number of schools getting school counsellors/ psychology nowadays. I want to become a school counsellor/ psychology because I want to help the teenagers as nowadays more and more teenagers are becoming astray. A school counsellor/ psychology is there to help them to change and give them advice on how they can change. A school counsellor/ psychology helps create joy for others, bring hope to the lost, and love to the lonely.

To become a school counsellor/ psychology, I need to complete the course Masters Degree in Human Services/School Counselling. This means that I need to go Polytechnic or JC before going to University to complete the Master Degree.

Mostly likely, I would choose to go Polytechnic than JC as a JC student needs to take the general paper. The General paper requires a very good foundation of English and English is the subject that I cannot score. In Polytechnic, I need to take the course Diploma in Psychology & Community Services which requires three years of studying. For the first year of the course, I need to learn the introduction to psychology, introduction to community services, social psychology, introduction to statistics & research methods, IT applications for behavioral sciences, creativity & applied thinking skills, Sports & Wellness and more. For the second year, I need to learn brain and behaviour, understanding the exceptional child, interdisciplinary general module sub 1 and 2, understanding disability and more. For the last year, I need to learn about Introduction to Psychometrics, Assessment & Ethics, Fundamentals of Crisis Intervention, Working with Social & Community Services and I am also required to do a research project or industry attachment programme. To enter the course, I am required to score a minimum of C6 for my English, D7 for Additional math or Elementary math and C6 for 3 other subjects. After I had completed the course, I need to study in the University to become a psychology.

After completing the course in the University, psychologists in Singapore are employed in various settings which include MINDEF (Ministry of Defence), MCYS (Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports), MOE (Ministry if Education), MOH (Ministry of Health), ITE, SPRING Singapore and in consultancy firms and research organizations.
